426. VOICETEAM'S FAN IN THE MIRROR.

I decided to go full meta and record this post. Felt cute, audio may end up deleted later!

This is for voiceteam Mystery Box 2025's Fan in the Mirror challenge, which says: Review what you've achieved in the past 12 months and write a blog post/meta roundup of at least 500 words, discussing the fanworks you created, what you were proud of, where you'd like to be next year, and what you'd like to do next year. This can discuss any kind of fanwork created, but it should spend significant time on audio fanworks—new podficcers who don't have audio fanworks to reflect on from this year can still write about audio fanwork goals for next year!

I apparently posted 128 works during 2025, with 66 of them being podfic. Wow. Who knew I'd ever post that much podfic? Whoever predicted I would podfic?

Most, if not all, of this work was for an exchange or challenge. I really miss writing for myself. I finally updated the last piece of one of my WIPs. I was avoiding updating you came back as the underdog (Wanda/Bucky) for three years because I really loved this story and I didn't want to say goodbye to it. I posted the last bonus piece a few days ago (and now I hope to record chapters for myself so I can go back and tighten up the writing). I feel like my fannish identity is one that I'd like to reclaim again, if that makes sense. I miss writing. I miss the obsessive need to write a story. I miss how I used to feel in the honeymoon of exchanges. (I miss getting comments, but I've never been one to get a lot of comments, but I feel like it hurts less when I'm not comparing myself to Writer B who wrote the same fandom/ship as me in an exchange. This is a whole other kettle of fish, I think.)

My goals for 2026 include:

Only participate in the exchanges/challenges I want to participate in. FOMO can get lost. While I enjoy exchanges a lot, I've felt burnt out and unmotivated over the last two years. I sometimes feel like it's not worth participating, because I can spend a lot of time on a piece and get really no traffic at all (including no acknowledgement from the recipient, which is burning me out). I know that's the life of a creative, but it's bummed me out when I'm surrounded by chatter about other stories that people enjoyed. (Yuletide remains so rough for me thanks to this!)

I miss writing stories for myself, so I want to return to that. I want to be obsessed! I want to write self-indulgent shit for ME! I'm my best recipient and I feel like I've been neglecting her a lot. I have half-cracked ideas floating around in my head—and have had some of them for years—and I want to put more time into those because I want to see them written.

I want to only create for fandoms/ships that I want to create for. This is more or less for podfic. There are some fandoms and ships on my profile that don't really represent my interests, but I participated in multivoices or challenges because 1) I wanted to be involved in a group thing and have fun and 2) for a friend. I suspect I'll never completely get away with only participating in projects that are of my fandoms/ships (and even fic that's more to my tastes) and I'm fine with this because what matters to me, especially when it comes to podfic, is that I have fun (especially since it's not a highly engaged with piece of fanwork, so having fun with people is my top priority and makes creating podfic worth it for me), but I'd like to be more mindful moving forward about what projects I take on. (Again, let FOMO exist.)

I do hope I continue to make podfic. There are so many benefits to reading stories aloud and having my stories read. I want to talk about that below.

One piece of advice I've seen and heard about writing is that it's beneficial to read your work aloud. I used to scoff at this because I never wanted to read my words aloud. Ever since I started embracing podfic—and even making it—I have learned so much about writing that's been beneficial to me.

Podficcing did bring up a lot of really cruel insecurities within me. I feel like I don't say things properly. I feel like I read too fast. I feel like some words blend together and you have no idea what I'm saying. My accent is shit! (Somehow the Aussie accent was one of the most attractive in the world? What the fuck are people on? LOL.) I had an (non-Aussie) ex-friend comment about how I didn't pronounce things correctly (I'm Aussie, mate). There are words that I just suck at saying. I'm not very good (at the moment—positivity!) at accents or speaking words from other languages. It was a whole new skill, and a perfectionist like me (who is also self-conscious!) really struggled with it at first. (I won't lie, my first Voiceteam Mystery Box was really rough that I ended up crying because of all the comparisons I was making with other people who have different accents LOL.)

My inner voice that reads quietly is perfect at accents (or "accents"). The words I don't know how to pronounce sound so posh and correct in my head. There are phrases that make sense when you read them quietly that are absolutely atrocious when you read them aloud. I've learned that fragmented sentences are an absolute nightmare (please, writers, stop doing this and write proper sentences). Run on sentences are a monster that need to be put down. (Use full stops! Less commas!) I've also learned that dialogue tags need to be clear, clean and used! I've read works where I have no idea who's speaking so I make an assumption based on the information I have.

There are some words I cannot say together. "One another" sucks for me. The way words feel in my mouth is obviously so different to how they feel in my head. I've realised that some description is too much, and it doesn't allow me as a reader to really embrace the emotion that I need because it overkills it. Sometimes I find some description is too little, and I literally have no idea what's going on. When people write dialogue interruptions, having narration before the dialogue that interrupts the interrupted dialogue breaks momentum. Some writers give the character too many things to do in a second—scoff, shrug, huff. It's hard to read! I've been taking a lot of this into consideration when I write now.

I feel like I have a good approach to reading. I try to read long sentences slower, unless I feel the pace is frantic. I try to read short sentences faster. I try to look at where the big, dramatic breaks need to be. I try to break up those long run-on sentences because, honestly, they need a bloody pause sometimes. I try to embrace the emotion a character is feeling, so if someone gasps, I try to gasp. If someone mutters, well… I don't really mutter, but I try to be softer. (I'm trying to figure out character voices.) I try to get into my reading in a way that entertains me as a reader, because if I'm not entertained, then why am I reading?

When I listen to podfic about my own stories (and read them for podfic), I hear the words that are too closely used together. I remember listening to a fabulous podfic about one of my works and a comment I said aloud was "Too many people are smiling". Another one was "Why is this character shrugging so much?" One in particular that I remember listening to while walking had me muttering, "Jesus, she's furrowing her brows a lot". (I remember the exact fic, too.)

One of the greatest lessons I've learned from podfic is that you have to trust the reader to understand what you're putting down. This is something I've been told numerous times during my writing course theory. Trust the reader. Give them just enough information, but trust them to make the conclusions. I've received podfics where I've listened to the reader and gone "They got it. I did my job." There is nothing more rewarding than listening to your work and hearing someone who never existed in your head, who never spoke to you about your work, and who never knew what your intentions were actually understand what you intended. This could be how I wrote a character, how I wanted a character to say a specific line, or just a work in general. (Sometimes people pick up on what I hadn't realised I had intended, or can't articulate as an intention. Sometimes I just write shit with no intention at all!)

I've also learned that sometimes some words don't mean the same to me as they do to someone else (hahahaha HAHAHA). We all come to the written word with our own experiences and baggage (and, as I've learned from talking to some people who speak other languages, your understanding of your own language. English is so fucked). I sometimes use words that aren't correct (they sure feel correct, haha).

I've had some people read my works in a way I hadn't intended or thought about. That doesn't mean they're wrong! It could mean that I didn't do my job as the author. It could mean that I had unintentionally written something that conveyed something else entirely. It could mean that the reader has brought their own experiences and perspective to my piece that I hadn't considered. I've never really had anyone miss the point of a work, or read it in a way that's made me go "You got that from my work?" It's always been "Oo, they understood what I wanted to achieve with that piece of dialogue!" or "Ooh, I didn't think about interpreting this this way".

There are a lot of talented readers in fandom who I wish fandom would appreciate a lot more. Podficcing is a lot of work (contrary to what some people believe!). My first Voiceteam Mystery Box team in 2024 encouraged me to listen to podfic I received several years ago that I avoided listening to because I felt ✨perceived✨, and I learned so much about a story I loved so much. It's another way to participate in fandom and appreciate something you love. Podficcers don't ask me to pay them to create a comic of a work that they apparently feel so inspired by and have ideas for… so they're good eggs in my carton.

I sometimes find listening to podfic to be an uncomfortable experience, although that discomfort only lasts a few seconds. Why is it uncomfortable for me? Because I feel perceived. A podfic is evidence that a real person has read my work. A fourth wall is created when you're interacting with a username. (It's why we sometimes forget we're dealing with real people.) I'm someone who's always been private about my creative endeavours and love for writing (until 2025, whoo! Character growth!). Writing is an act of vulnerability for me, and when I publish it, it is yet another act of vulnerability. I also realised over the last two years that podficcing was also a vulnerable act, too. (That's probably why I had a whole meltdown over insecurities, lol.) No matter how someone interacts with my work, they are interacting with a piece of me that I have put out there for their hands—or voice—to touch. It's something that I hope becomes easier over time. I'm very glad that I was encouraged to listen to podfic about my work, because I got to experience the stories all over again through someone who, I hope, really enjoyed the work in the first place and that's why they podded it.

I'm really grateful to that one person who encouraged me during a Snowflake Challenge prompt to give podfic a go, because there was so much to learn from it. There is. I benefit as a writer and a reader—and I feel like I could potentially take the plunge this year to try to learn how to do accents. :)

I didn't really have any intentions for how I wanted to format this post. I wanted to end on this note, though. When I started receiving requests to approve podfic links to my works, I thought everyone got podfic. When I realised that this was not the case, I felt so overwhelmed and privileged that someone felt the desire to interact with my work. And now that I've podficced myself, to know that someone may have sat for a few hours recording and recording, soundscaping, fixing errors, rerecording (hello, my life of saying the wrong word!), etc. means a lot. I often feel greedy during Voiceteam or Battleship when I say I want podfic of my works, but I do! And now that I know a little bit more about this pocket of fandom, I hope that me saying I want podfic of my works isn't seen as me being greedy or wanting to take away from others, but me saying "Hey, I'm one of those writers who likes podfic!" I hope that the people who have podficced and will podfic my works do so because they love the works as much as I do (and love the works I fail(ed) to love, but have gotten to appreciate through someone who challenges me to be proud of it because it's something they deem is worth liking).

Anyway, to wrap up: I hope 2026 is the year where I write a lot more for myself, because I feel like if I write a lot more for myself, maybe I can attract more podficcers with honey (aka the works that I really, really love, and wrote because I wanted to write them) and I will feel happier and more fulfilled and stop worrying about how my work is performing against someone else. I like exchanges, but I miss treating me with gifts.

Because I've been feeling burnt out over the last year, I don't really have any recs compiled (I lied and did for FIAB, but I deleted the notepad after copying my bits over, so, RIP). I think I may move away from creating rec lists as I'm not quite sure how used they are and they take so much work that they're becoming unfun.

When a witch hunter starts killing witches, Agatha and Rio begrudgingly team up to take them down.

This idea was a lot bigger than it had any right to be for a fortnight turnaround and I wish that the end result was reflective of that, but I'm still happy with it because I had a lot of fun exploring Rio's relationship with death and grief in this. I was inspired by some of the cards I like (and dislike) playing in Marvel Snap, and wrote some of those characters into this. I wish this story got a little action during the anonymous period, but I knew when my name was on it that it would find its audience, and I'm glad it did. :)

It's not safe baiting avocadomoon because sometimes you end up receiving a mammoth of a gift. I only request Harry Potter when I see it in the tagset and have a feeling avocadomoon will participate. This was a wild ride, a fantastic, in-depth exploration of time travel and the consequences of time turners. Prisoner of Azkaban is my favourite book/movie of the franchise, so to get a story that's based on that concept and seeing the concept of time turners fleshed out was so enjoyable. This was a delight to read.

Her phone didn’t ring for weeks after she popped her knee, and Tashi told herself she didn’t care. Why should she? She had Art, and Art was a good friend to have by her side.

Tashi/Art is a guilty pleasure of mine and I was thrilled I got to explore this pairing through a Tashi character study. She was so much fun to write and I really enjoyed how this story came together.

He was dressed in jeans that fit him too loosely, a t-shirt with a button-up on over, as if that was somehow going to paint an illusion of professionalism to the look. He kicked off his shoes and handed her a bag.

“Chocolates,” he said, by way of explanation when she looked inside.

“I can see they’re chocolates,” she said, mesmerized by his choice of Ferrero Roche hazelnut chocolates. Maybe they were meant to be funny.

“Don’t judge,” Patrick said, brushing past her with intent and popping his head into the kitchen where Art was characteristically hiding. “Hey.”

This was a great exploration of the three of them post-movie and how they still are quite dysfunctional and shit at communication. I like that it didn't try to wrap them up in a pretty bow, and offered the implication that they aren't exactly going to work out long-term, but they might if they keep their heads in the sand.

You can never go wrong with demon!Nikolai. I love how this shows a glimpse of how Zoya, Tamar, Tolya, Genya, and David work together to try to keep demon!Nikolai under control. This should've been a scene in the book.

I was lucky enough to receive two gifts for yuletide 2024. I really enjoyed my time in this exchange (I had a rough go of it in 2022 with the gifting side and the Yuleswaps side, so I took a break in 2023). I think this was the exchange I had the most fun in.

This was how it always went. Agatha would ask, and Rio would never respond. Agatha would always have her answer in the dread coiling low in her belly.

If Death wouldn’t help her, dark magic would.

I am so proud of this one. I had an easy time writing it. I really enjoyed the themes and I just loved how it all came together. This is set pre-canon, with Nicholas, and explores Agatha, Rio, and Nicholas, and how death haunted them all. I feel like it could've been longer, but I think the story is one of my best, and I was certainly proud of it when I wrote it.

Agnes doesn't remember why she hates Rio. She doesn't remember that they've had this conversation before. Rio at her door with a peace offering, conversations about the case, the evidence sometimes differed but the case and the corpse were always the same, and they'd talk about these nothingnesses and then, as always, Rio would lean forward and ask.

"Do you remember why you hate me?"

Agnes never does. She remembers Rio's face, she remembers her name, she remembers the way her hands used to feel around her waist, but she doesn't remember what had happened between them. The memories had faded beneath Maximoff's spell but something still remained.

This is Agatha/Rio stuck in a timeloop during 1x01, while exploring how they came to know one another, get together, and split apart. I particularly loved the exploration of Rio's identity throughout this. Perfectly done. It has a nice rhythm to it.

Vasya has already transformed Morozko, but now her unpredictable magic has started to transform the world around them, as well.

The maturity between these two! This explores the concept of winter/spring in a quiet moment between the two of them. I was super thrilled to have gotten a gift from dolorosa_12. ♥

I think I had intended to write this from Baela's POV (I was getting comfortable writing her thanks to DWRP), but because of the freeforms, I decided to challenge myself with writing Jace, which was a fun exercise.

357. BATTLESHIP 2024 - MY DAVY JONES' LOCKER.

My third year of Battleship is over! :D I was on Team Mermaid this year and I had a beaching time with my team! Even though we didn't win, it was one of the best social experiences I've had in this game, and I'm so glad that I not only got over my creative burnout and managed to create over 25 things, but I got to make some new friends, too. (D'aww!)

Things I want to brag about that are personal accomplishments:

I ended up writing approximately 40k of published works (not including the two WIPs that share 10k that I'm still working on), which I think is great. In 2022 for the Frost era I wrote 50k and in 2023 for the Tower era I wrote 9k (can you feel the burnout?). I'm back, baby!

I collaborated with peasina! This was my first collaboration ever! We bonded over tarot and peasina asked me if I'd like to do a reading and sent me the most beautiful Pokemon artwork. She would give me the cards and I got to decide which order they'd sit in the reading. A lot of the Pokemon puns are her work.

I hit work caps for Boards 1 and 2, and really enjoyed the rush of creating triple drabbles so we could clear our board and move onto the Bosses. I love the rallying the most in Battleship.

All the challenges we did as a team were so much fun! I really enjoyed the Rockpool Bar and am so glad everyone was game to participate in that. peasina came up with a comment bingo that made the work reveals period less quiet and lonely. (In case you didn't know: my team was orcawesome!)

I got two amazing podfic of my works! :O I also listened to a lot of podfic this year!

I wrote for new fandoms and converted myself into a shipper! I wrote for Challengers and House of the Dragon (and made myself ship Helaena/Aemond), and revisited a very old fandom in The Vampire Diaries. I did not write MCU or The Boys this year despite some really great requests (I have some superhero burnout).

The worst thing about Battleship is I struggle with titles at times. This will never change lol.

Last year I didn't go through the collections because I was burnt out, so I'm glad to say that I managed to get through all of the teams' collections and really enjoyed a lot of the works that I was familiar and unfamiliar with.

I lost for the first time! But I really enjoyed how my team members were always so encouraging and enthusiastic, and how some of them even ventured into new mediums for this round. Seeing others try podfic for the first time and having our veteran Mermaid podficcers help them out was really cool. That's what Battleship is all about imo.

This will sound lame but I MADE NEW FRIENDS and that is the reason why I participate in battleshipex!

Next year I'd like to contribute art, so I need to… get practicing… I'll be surprised if I try podfic. I don't think I have the reading voice for it lol.

When (not if!) I finish those two other fics, I'll update this list…

fandomtrees has taken root and I don't know tree metaphors well enough to make this work (despite doing a lot of work with trees in my day-to-day job which just makes this confession all the more embarrassing), but it's open! This is my second round participating, and the big theme of this year is "Let's get her to actually read" because damn, did I get a lot of book recs.

One of my favourite things about the Inej/Kaz relationship is their emotional intimacy, and that's captured so beautifully in the progression of Inej finding herself on the sea and returning to Kaz for safe harbour. Even after all the heists, I love that Kaz is there for Inej even when she's chosen to fulfil a mission that he was never involved in. What I also really love is that even though they're not physically intimate i.e. hand touching, kissing, etc., they are still physically intimate in the non-conventional understanding where Inej always physically returns to Kaz and Kaz always, always welcomes her back.

My second yuletide is done and dusted! This year, I was really lucky to receive four gifts for two fandoms (three from the main collection and one from Madness, although I consider them all Yuletide gifts!). I have been desperate for Amy/Laurie and I was honestly so thrilled to get stories focused on them (and focused on different aspects of their relationship)!

I ended up writing two case fics because I decided that there was no better way to end the year than with some sort of crime solving. I enjoyed writing both—one was filled with nostalgia and exploring the reasons why someone would steal from a friend and the other was utter ridiculousness that let me have a lot of fun in writing hyperbolic situations that would only happen with superheroes.

There is so much great stuff in both collections. Yuletide is a fic exchange that focuses on rare fandoms, so if there's a fandom out there that you love that hardly gets any fic, check out the collections (past and present) and see if you can find any gems!

This was my second year participating in ficinabox, which happens to mark my one-year anniversary in exchanges. This round, I was successful in swaps and got to have fun creating for different assignments. I ended up writing 72k in total (which is only a testament to how much fun I had creating for this exchange) and explored a lot of the collection (I'm not too sure how many comments I left, but I think I broke my own record). 285. EXCHANGE WRAP | SEASONS OF DRABBLES.

So I think this round of seasonsofdrabbles might be my favourite??? It's hard to have a favourite when there's always a handful of amazing drabbles that just hit me in the face or kick me in the gut or rip my heart out.

As a participant, I love every round because I make it a point to spice up my requests and ask for a few different fandoms. As a creator, I like to use this as an opportunity to experiment, try new characters/ships, and challenge myself with great ideas inspired by amazing requests. This time around, I stuck to 200-300 words because I was busy with ficinabox. (I did try to write 100 words, but the drabble that originally had it didn't feel right, so 100 words unfortunately didn't make it as a successful hit on my Drabble Writing Bingo Card. Sometimes that happens! I was still very, very happy with what I had spun into tiny stories.) I also wrote some ships I've never written before, which was exciting and terrifying.

I was absolutely spoiled. (I got a drabble focusing on a character study of my favourite The Boys character and drabbles of my main fandom, TVD! (So glad I didn't sacrifice that request for something else!) I also got a DCU Comics drabble (I was so excited to shake that!) and, of course, what appears to be my main fandom, MCU.)

(I also don't know which comics may pique someone's interest as I only list what I think is relevant, so here we go!)

unsent_letters_exchange has successfully delivered its letters and packages (and maybe some bills) for 2022. I had such a blast! This was the first time I participated in the exchange and I am so glad I did. (I've been wanting to ever since I discovered it sometime last year.) Epistolary is something I really enjoyed writing and I can only hope I have more opportunities to do so!

When Bucky goes A.W.O.L after being brought back from the Blip, Fury pulls out all the stops to try and find him, including going through Natasha’s collection of personal letters addressed to "Soldat" and "James".

I initially wasn't going to sign up for this exchange for a few reasons (one being Trying to Be Responsible) but then I saw ultra_fic's request and I couldn't get it out of my head. My weakness is Bucky/Natasha paired with Red Room or Vormir. I tried my hardest to resist, but as I was already thinking of them in the Red Room having sent letters to one another, I was toast. I shared with my flist that a specific request was the sole reason why I signed up for this exchange and this one was The One.

This was so much fun to piece together. I hadn't intended for it to feature an ensemble that revolved around Bucky and Natasha, but when I sat down to write it, I first started with Yelena and Fury's first email and it all spiralled from there. It was so much fun piecing together Bucky and Natasha' Red Room history into the MCU's canon and building on from that. I also tried to layer each interaction so that it built to the climax.

This is probably one of my favourite fics that I've written for an exchange.

Five articles Lois Lane published about Superman and the one article she didn’t.

I might be a little addicted to writing for svgurl but, hey, I'm okay with that. I write media releases at work and I had been wanting to write something with a little more flair and fun to it, and svgurl's request came up as a pinch hit that I had to have (sorry not sorry).

It was so much fun threading the personal and professional development of Lois, Clark, Lex and (in particular) Jimmy throughout the story. I was going to date each article, but then I didn't feel that was necessary as I felt the events as they unfolded was enough to show that time was progressing forward. I really enjoyed writing a slightly political and biased slant with Lois' articles, and I particularly liked showing Jimmy's professional journey without needing him to be overly present.

This one was a lot of fun to write. I feel like I packed it with a lot of things intentionally and subconsciously. (My favourite articles are the Lex Luthor one and the final one.) I had to stop myself from writing 20+ articles as I was having way too much fun.

Kate integrates herself into the Avengers and gives Clint a headache in the process.

When I saw this come up as a pinch hit, all I had in my head was Kate on Twitter being a troll. This transformed into an ensemble piece that centred around Kate being obnoxious, overly friendly, and very much the glue tying our Avengers together. This was absolutely ridiculous and I had so much fun showing the progression of time and Kate's relationships, as well as her positive impact on Clint.

The ending is my favourite. Yes, I laughed at it. (I also learned a few things in Photoshop, which was cool!)

Let us report events logically and without bias: on MONDAY AFTERNOON, the future HIGHBORN HEIR was witnessed escorting the temptress Muggleborn along the boardwalk, and with her own eyes, this reporter witnessed HAND HOLDING.

On THURSDAY MORNING, the ladder-climbing lady was spotted at a local pub MAKING EYES at His Most Honorable over PANCAKES!

And SATURDAY EVENING found the two UNACCOMPANIED sharing a meal at a Muggle restaurant (something called… "tie food?" The names those Muggles come up with!) SITTING CLOSELY and SPEAKING INTIMATELY. The licentious lady - for interested parties - was dressed in a dark maroon blouse and matching skirt - Muggle in style, naturally - and a pair of beautiful - as it pains this reporter to admit - Amina Arncliffe Spring '99 kitten heels, in off-white. The generous gentleman - TO MATCH! - was wearing a Muggle-style t-shirt proclaiming PRINCE AND THE REVOLUTION WORLD TOUR 1985 (how silly! Why on earth would the Prince be touring the entire world with a revolutionary sect? Those Muggles!) and a pair of denim trousers. And yes - to answer the many, many reader response owls - his hair is VERY SHORT INDEED now! (Miss Granger's influence? No doubt!)

THIS IS SO GOOD. I can't tell you how much I enjoyed this. The articles were fantastic—the voices in this were superb. This features one of my favourite Black sisters in a prominent role that fleshes her out and lets her be her own person. It's delicious!

Sirius/Hermione is an old, nostalgic ship for me. I still read it from time to time as I love the stories and the chemistry, and this fic captured the dynamic I love so well with a more matured Sirius and Hermione. I loved the journalism meta that was also involved in this. I loved the friendships Hermione has in this and how each character who shows up is so mature and not a caricature as they were in both the books and movies.

I was so disappointed when it ended because it ended. I wanted it to go on forever.

On the evening of Beltane 1976, Bellatrix Lestrange née Black stood before the Dark Lord’s court and swore upon her magic to personally cleanse the Black family line of all those she found unworthy of the name.

It was the greatest protection she could offer.

I thought this was so good and so funny. The Bellatrix voice is superb—I love that she's so biting and dry and she also is a little naive at times. Andromeda is morally ambiguous and it's great to see. This is a relationship that I'm fascinated by and it was great to read a more empathetic take on Bellatrix's perception of Andromeda's betrayal. Bellatrix is still "Pureblood strong!" but I appreciated seeing a more family-oriented Bellatrix, too. It added some great complications to the story.

I love the Black family and this was a good look into how fucked up they are.

Hey Susan,
I’ve been meaning to call you since the grad party.

I didn't really know what to expect when I began reading this and it took me by surprise (in a really good way). This is a great exploration of a man's mature growth over the years and how he learns of and unlearns some of his own toxic habits. There is mature themes in this story, particularly about abuse, but it doesn't go into graphic detail about it. It's a fantastic look at empathy and how people can grow without you in their life, but you can still positively impact them.

After Clark's death, Lois grieves in her own way.

I love stories about grief, and when I saw this in the collection, I was curious to see DCEU's Lois given the spotlight when I feel she's been shoved continuously into the shadows. This was a great look at Lois in the aftermath of Clark's death. I particularly liked how Lois used writing as her outlet of grief and to tell her truth (similarly to how she tells reveals the truth through her journalism). I really liked the characterisation of who Clark is to her throughout this; Lois' perspective on Clark is one of my favourite things, and while grief certainly clouds her perspective, the way Lois loves Clark for the man and hero he is rather than Superman for being Clark is fantastic. One of the reasons why I love Lois and Clark is that he may be some powerful almighty alien superhero, but to Lois, he's just a gentle man made of flesh and bone, and this captured that perfectly.

I ended up pinch hitting (and writing a pinch hitter treat) for fffx! I enjoyed creating for this round because I do love writing longfic and these three stories were fun to write. I didn't expect to write so much, but I guess that's what happens when you're enjoying yourself!

I went through the entire collection and found some great fics that I really enjoyed. I've linked them below.

When Elena discovers Klaus shares a magical empathy bond with her, she learns more about the big bad wolf than she bargained for.

The prompts were perfect to explore Elena's grief, particularly the ugly side to it. I wanted to explore her self-destructing and shoving her head so deep within the river of denial and even learning that sometimes the best way to overpower the big bad wolf is to show it empathy. I was intending for this to be a lot darker than it was because the last thing I wanted to do was romanticise Klaus/Elena and disregard the trauma he's inflicted upon her, but I really like how this turned out. I think Elena started it off as drowning and then she finally rose to the surface by the end of it.

While Alina tries to settle into her new life in Ketterdam, she finds that Aleksander isn’t willing to let her go. The stag amplifier’s connected them together in a way neither of them had ever bargained for.

I've never written Darklina before but I found the dynamic super interesting, especially in its fucked-up capacity. I wanted to explore Alina in the aftermath of season one and show her coming into her own. She deserved to have closure with how the Darkling treated her, and I think Aleksander deserved to be shown a kind hand, too. I had a lot of fun writing this one and really went in hard on the light/shadow metaphor lmao.

When Natasha’s unable to contact Yelena, she and Steve put their plans to break the team out of the Raft on hold to find her.

I love writing Steve/Nat so I couldn't help myself when I saw a request for it on the pinch hitter post. This was meant to be a small one-shot that featured one scene, but it just grew and grew into an aftermath of Black Widow. I've been wanting to explore the trauma of the Red Room and felt like I had a chance to do that, especially since Natasha just took it down. How's she going to feel after that? It turned itself into a mission fic, and I really like how it came together.

To avoid being set up, Rory blurts out that she's dating Paris. The only problem is that she definitely isn't, and now the whole town thinks she is.

This was a lot of fun and felt like it could seamlessly fit into a later season of the show. Rory's naivety is on full display and Paris' candor and appreciation for Rory is really enjoyable. This fic shows just how Rory and Paris work well together—Paris makes the decisions Rory's too insecure to make and Rory grounds Paris in a way she desperately needs. It's a great exploration of finding yourself. The Lorelai and Rory banter is spot-on. And it was nice to see some guest appearances from the kooky residents of Stars Hollow.

Blaise Zabini keeps her from simplifying, from drawing easy lines and boundaries of good and bad, right and wrong, and she doesn’t like it. And it doesn’t help that Blaise Zabini is attractive, damn him, and while Cho thinks she doesn’t like him she’s also attracted to him, and Blaise Zabini is a Problem.

This was such a great take on the war and how it impacted two characters we don't know much about. Cho gets the treatment she deserves and is fleshed out and celebrated as a Chinese woman (the author actually goes into her heritage, which is fantastic) who made mistakes as a young girl and is still paying for them. Cho grieving Cedric was a great character choice in this. (She also got to be more than "Cedric Diggory's girlfriend" which was so great!) Blaise's characterisation fit how I love seeing him presented—he defies the Slytherin and Death Eater ways but still falls prey to playing in that circle. He's a great foe for how we usually see Slytherins depicted in canon. This was a great Cho-centric piece that gives her the story and hopeful ending she deserved in canon.

This was such a great exploration of Melina as a woman and a Widow and really delved into how her playing house impacted her and gave her a sense of freedom and relief from the Red Room. The budding relationship between Melina and Alexei is brilliant, and I really enjoyed Melina coming into her own as Natasha and Yelena's mother. (Melina isn't characterised by who she is in relation to any of the other three characters—her Red Room trauma is on full display and she is explored as a well-rounded character.)

Bea loved the house, even if the house didn't immediately love her back.

The summary and tags on this fic intrigued me so much and I was not disappointed when I read it. It is such a great fic that explores how love and kindness can go such a long way. The characterisation of the house turns the "haunted house" trope on its head in such a lovely way all the while not losing its hauntedness.

I do not like the countryside. Jude, similarly, does not like the countryside. Shazzer herself has once referred to a country walk as a ‘shit-strewn misery where it’s odds-on pissing it down’. Shazzer has a hen do at a cottage in the quiet countryside. Needless to say, shit goes down.

I am canon blind to the books of BJD. I only know the movies and from those movies I only remember Renee, Colin and Hugh. But my lack of familiarity with the book canon did not stop me from enjoying this. This is an epistolary fic written in diary entries and every single bloody diary entry is so perfectly different based on the character who is writing. I was sucked in by the pacing and character voices and found myself enjoying the representation of the friendship amongst our diarists. This was so enjoyable for someone who was canon blind that I can only imagine how enjoyable this is for someone who knows the books inside and out.

There are over 200 works in the collection. Check it out! I can't wait to participate in fffx again for round three.
