[community profile] snowflake_challenge #4: In your own space, add something to your fandom’s canon.

Let's go with Six of Crows since I'm currently in the middle of re-reading Crooked Kingdom and this canon is fresh in my mind. Be mindful of spoilers. (I haven't read anything outside of Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom, and am aware that there's a book set post-Crooked Kingdom. In this house, we ignore what we want to ignore!)

*

When everything's done and dusted and the band of crows seemingly has parted ways:

• Inej sends Kaz letters from The Wraith detailing secrets she's discovered. This is her way of sharing her adventures on the seas with him while pretending that her reasoning for sending letters is all business. Eventually, she removes her own armour and sends him letters because she wants to, not because it's business.

• Kaz writes to Inej detailing the day-to-day of Ketterdam. She's his spider; she needs to know what's happening so she can stay informed. It's not because he misses her or anything. But the letters stop being business-oriented and including only details about the comings and goings of certain people in Ketterdam, and become a little more heartfelt as Inej transforms from his spider to the person he chooses to be emotionally vulnerable with.

• Inej continues to return to Ketterdam to see Kaz—and, sometimes, she brings those she's rescued who have no home to Ketterdam to start anew. Kaz helps them settle—it's the least he could do; he was once them, after all, and history will never repeat itself ever again.

• Kaz helps settle Inej's parents in Ketterdam. While they do want to return to Ravka, they want to see the home that Inej has created for herself here—and they learn very quickly that Inej will always come back to Ketterdam. The heart is an arrow and Inej's arrow always leads back to here.

• Matthias never dies. He and Nina travel to Ravka, where he's continuously exposed to the Grisha culture and sees similarities and differences between his culture and Nina's. He helps train Grisha in how to protect themselves in physical combat in the instance their powers are inaccessible. Nina learns how to use her new power and harness it.

• Because I am a fucking sap, Matthias and Nina travel to Fjerda and find Trassel. TRASSEL LIVES HAPPILY EVER AFTER. HE IS A GOOD DOGGO.

• Jesper learns how to use his Fabrikator powers to make weapons that complement Wylan's bombs. He also learns how to use his powers to guide his bullets and teaches that to other Fabrikators to give them an edge with their abilities, since they're not seen as an offensive type of Grisha. He and Wylan may travel to Ravka and Novyi Zem to learn, but he always comes back to Ketterdam. That's home.

• The Dregs become a safe haven for everyone without a family. Kaz never lets anyone ever starve or be sick or die without dignity again.

• Of course, there's another heist.

• And when they hear a version of jurda parem is being created under a different name, they, of course, go to destroy it. No Grisha will ever fall prey to its consequences again.

At first, I was going to do my top Katherine moments, but as I was collecting caps, I realised I would be here for an age and I would be taking caps and creating picspams of almost every scene Katherine’s ever been in, especially in Season 2. So, for my entry in [community profile] lands_of_magic’s character study challenge, I want to babble about why I love Katherine Pierce and weave this into the way she was introduced to us on the show in 2x01.

Character: Katherine Pierce
Canon: The Vampire Diaries (TV)

Oh, man. I'm about to show my ass and embarrass myself with what I've been watching.

reading
I'm currently reading The Witcher: Baptism of Fire. I'm currently finding it a lot easier to read than Time of Contempt (I found that too slow and filled with too many characters I didn't care about), but so far Baptism seems okay. Yennefer is my favourite character and she hasn't appeared in the first 100 pages. I'm not usually a fantasy reader, so I struggle through all the fantasy-like stuff, but the characters are really enjoyable so I persevere.

My Goodreads updates literally consist of "Where is Yennefer?" because WHERE IS SHE?

I did buy The Viscount Who Loved Me since I have been enjoying all the trailers for the new season of Bridgerton. (I may have rewatched that trailer around 50 times.) Totally suspect that I will be annoyed by it since I've read excerpts and I dislike some of the more, uh… misogynistic value systems that exists in this world. More on this below.

NGL, I started reading this last night. It's easy to read. I already know I prefer the show.

watching
For Friday night movie night, I picked 10 Things I Hate About You. Still a classic. Still so much fun. I have found that the late 1990s and early 2000s movies contain words and plot tropes that we wouldn't necessarily accept in 2020+. Aside from one slur, I did find that the movie still holds up 20+ years later.

I'm watching Killing Eve and did not expect to enjoy it so much. Somehow I'm in season 3. Villanelle is so much fun to watch and is so unhinged (I love it when she randomly yells and does things to stir people up), and Sandra Oh is amazing as always. Every time I start watching an episode, I immediately see Cristina Yang, but Sandra disappears into Eve. Eve is so, so different to Cristina—she's not so self-assured and she's a little more swayable than Queen Yang. (For one, I think Cristina would be dragging Villanelle's ass for fifth.)

I binged Bridgerton season 2 and I fucking LOVE IT. I'm going to be rewatching this over and over and over (and already am rewatching it). I love the inclusion of a desi woman as the lead. I loved the enemies to lovers plotline. I loved the development and chemistry of the characters. This season was so much more fun—characters got to be funny and some actors got to lean into comedy which really livened their characters up for me. (Anthony got rid of his hideous sideburns.) This was so much better than season 1 imo.

AND IT HIT EVERY SINGLE ONE OF MY FAVOURITE TROPES.

So, I've been wanting to post a little more about fandom and things I've been reading/watching and figured I might post about this every Monday.

I've had a portion of this post drafted for a few weeks now and figured it was about time to just throw it into the wind.

*

I finished Ed Brubaker's The Winter Soldier: The Complete Collection.

I've been waiting for this comic to arrive for over four months (thanks to COVID) and I was not disappointed when I cracked it open and read it. It's crazy to think that this is the comic that inspired Captain America: The Winter Soldier. (Let's not get into how poorly Marvel Studios treats the Marvel comic book writers and artists.)

some thoughts )

I hope to read more Marvel Comics. (Does anyone have good recs for Bucky, Natasha, Yelena, Peter, Wanda and Elektra?) This was a lot of fun to see how characters who may never interact in the MCU interact in Marvel 616. (This is Marvel 616, right? Someone teach me! I tried to Google and it was hella confusing.)

*

I also finished watching Raising Dion. This is a fun superhero show that's apparently based on comics. It's about a regular woman who is the mother of a superpowered son and has to help him navigate his powers and his grief for his late father.

some thoughts )

I would recommend this show if you like superpowers in modern society and characters having real problems. It definitely doesn't have alien showdowns (yet).

*

For Friday night movie night, we ended up watching The Mighty Ducks which was such a great nostalgic choice. I remember this franchise made me want to play hockey (this is not a career that even took off for me) and ice skate (something I very rarely do). While some of it is unbelievable (surely, hockey is a non-contact sport?), I really loved it. (The romance between Gordon and Charlie's mum was shoehorned in and so bad.)

QUACK QUACK QUACK.

I ended up watching Turning Red and… I don't think I have words to say how good this movie is, so I will do very brief dot points in a non-spoilery context.

non-spoilers )

It disappoints me that some people have slammed this movie for its period talk and exploration of growing up, but I can safely say (with a lot of disappointment) that racism and misogyny have dictated a lot of those opinions. This is one of Disney's best movies.

I finished reading Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo. I haven't read any other books in this universe yet, so all of these thoughts and questions are from someone who only inhaled the Crows specific stuff. I've also combined my thoughts of both books together because I never bothered to write them down about SOC when I had finished.

I enjoyed the duology and felt that the stories and characters were a lot of fun. I enjoyed the writing most of the time. I particularly enjoyed how the characters worked together similarly to how Ocean's 11's characters did.

Here's my assortment of thoughts: caw caw. )

I went for a bit of a big walk early this afternoon to try and catch up to my friend's Fitbit steps and now I'm tired and bored. I thought this was a great cocktail to write down some of my thoughts on What If...? so far.

I do come from enjoying the way The Flash introduced the Multiverse in season 2 and I've approached this series with the knowledge set from that show. I know MCU hasn't developed its Multiverse yet, but… whatever, DCTV has laid the groundwork brilliantly.

Ep 1: Captain Carter. )

Ep 2: T'Challa remains the best. )

I watched Black Widow last night, which was a lot of fun. While I miss the in-cinema experience, I actually liked doing it from the comfort of my lounge. I wore trackies, had my cats with me, and was very comfortable and relaxed.

spoiler thoughts. )

Anyway, for a while, I've been thinking about trying some public entries with my thoughts on the media I consume to get me back into using this journal. I don't really use it to document personal shit anymore, so why not be a nerd?
